The Entrepreneurship Challenge Program has been implemented in Ecuador since the year 2003 by Esquel and with the support of Citigroup Foundation. The aim of this program is to promote the entrepreneur culture in Ecuador by strengthening social capital and providing access to the business market for youths. The program gathers entrepreneurs living in the northwest of Pichincha province, offers them training, evaluates their business plans, and selects finalists and a winner to receive financing in order to turn the initial idea into a small business. In 2006, there were more than 1,000 young entrepreneurs who attended the trainings; a total of 386 people registered and 142 business plans were presented.
